Checking the burn

Staff Sgt. Anthony Phillips observes readings as oil from an A-10 Thunderbolt II burns in a spectrometer at Al Asad Air Base, Iraq. The spectrometer analyzes the burning engine fluid for contaminants that would signify wear and tear to the aircraft's engines. Sergeant Phillips is a nondestructive inspections technician with the 438th Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, and is deployed from the Kentucky Air National Guard's 123rd Tactical Airlift Wing.
