Planes over water

AIR FORCE PHOTOS

Aircrews who fly the planes dropping fire retardant on wildfire flames face hazards and challenges unique to their humanitarian mission. This includes flying at low altitudes, dealing with violent updrafts and downdrafts, dealing with reduced visibility and watching for other aircraft in the vicinity. Shown here, a modular airborne firefighting system is being loaded into a C-130 Hercules. (U.S. Army photo)
