Controlling Aviano Air Base airspace
Italian and U.S. Air Force radar controllers, Staff Sgts. Marcello Zappia (left) and Matthew Sandner, communicate through a vast network of people and equipment within the radar approach control or RAPCON at Aviano Air Base, Italy, in June 2003. The RAPCON prevents the safe operation of aircraft in the base's air space, coordinates the movements of air traffic and minimizes the delay of aircraft traveling in and out of the airspace. Sergeant Sandner is assigned to the 31st Operations Support Squadron. (U.S. Air Force photo/Airman 1st Class Isaac L. Freeman)
