Professor swims into record book ... again
Following their long-distance relay swim Aug. 1, Lt. Col. Tim Lawrence (in swim cap) and Peter Zabel are flanked by, left to right, Peter's father Ernst, Lawrence's coach Rick Oerman and Santa BarbaraChannel Swimming Association observers Dean White and Emilio Casanueva. The two swimmers combined to swim from Santa Barbara Island to Los Angeles, a distance of 42 miles, in just over 31 hours to earn a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. Colonel Lawrence is an astronautical engineering professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy. (Courtesy photo)
