Gen. Schriever's visionary space speech turns 50
General Bernard Schriever is remembered as the father of the U.S. Air Force space and missile program. Schriever Air Force Base in Colorado is named after this pioneer who on Feb. 19, 1957 addressed America's need for space during the inaugural Air Force Office of Scientific Research Astronautics Symposium in San Diego.
