Testing the tower

Staff Sgt. Oscar Alvarado makes a call on the crash phone in the air traffic control tower during an exercise Oct. 17 at Kadena Air Base, Japan. The crash phone is used to rapidly notify all base emergency services in the event of an aircraft mishap. The 18th Wing exercise from Oct. 13 to 19 tests the wing's ability to respond to a wartime situation. Sergeant Alvardo is assigned to the 18th Operations Squadron. (U.S. Air Force photo/Tech. Sgt.
