Medical team journeys across Pacific
LOS ANGELES (AFPN) -- The Wilford Hall medical team and C-17 Globemaster III aircrew carefully move the more than 800-pound mobile extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO, machine and Meaghan Ababa down the aircraft ramp to a waiting ambulance for transport to the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles Feb. 4. The ECMO machine works as a heart-lung bypass machine providing temporary heart and lung function during periods of severe cardiopulmonary failure. The patient made the six-hour flight from Hawaii to Los Angeles without incident. (U.S. Air Force photo by Master Sgt. Kimberly Spencer)
