Airman flies to Dog Island to test radio communication

DOG ISLAND, Fla. -- Lt. Col. Edward Linch's radio rests on the wing of his experimental aircraft before being used in Field Day 2005. The nationwide event is held by the American Radio Relay League to link amateur stations with federal, state and local disaster relief agencies. Colonel Linch flew his private plane here -- an island with no permanent residents or formal airfield -- establishing a link to 36 other operators during extremely poor atmospheric conditions. He is the wing plans chief of the 505th Command and Control Wing at nearby Hurlburt Field. (U.S. Air Force photo)
