POPE AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- Theresa Merkal, with husband 2nd Lt. Brian Merkal, had only 30-percent lung function before a double lung transplant in December. Mrs. Merkal was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at age 2. The Merkals moved here shortly before her transplant under the Humanitarian Reassignment Program.
