AIR FORCE PHOTOS

Just a phase

Airman 1st Class Shane Bridges reconnects a front leading edge actuator after it had been checked during a phase inspection of an F-16 Fighting Falcon June 18 at Joint Base Balad, Iraq. Ensuring the operability of the front leading edge flap is critical because the flap enhances the lift of the aircraft by creating an air channel under the wings, which provides more drag and allows the aircraft to maneuver during slower air speeds. Airman Bridges is a 332nd Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Squadron crew chief deployed from Shaw Air Force Base, S.C. (U.S. Air Force photo/Senior Airman Julianne Showalter)
