Airmen treat Iraqi children injured in mortar attack
Staff Sgt. Delbert Smith treats an Iraqi child at the Air Force Theater Hospital Feb. 19 at Balad Air Base, Iraq. The child was injured by an 82-millimeter mortar round, which struck a soccer field where he and other children were playing in the village of Al Jumia. A 12-year-old Iraqi child was killed and seven others were wounded during the attack. The village lies to the north of Balad AB. Four rounds were launched toward the base, but all fell short. However, two of the rounds struck the field where children were playing. Sergeant Smith is a 332nd Expeditionary Medical Operations Squadron intensive care unit technician deployed from Keesler Air Force Base, Miss. (U.S. Air Force photo/Senior Airman Julianne Showalter)
