Forward air controllers prepare for war

Staff Sgt. William Thomas (center) and Airman 1st Class Michael Kelley accompany U.S. Army Soldiers in hiking to a nearby village for an urban warfare scenario during Exercise Allied Strike II Nov. 4 at Hohenfels Army Garrison, Germany. The Airmen assisted the 173rd Air Brigade Combat Team, 191 Cavalry, in pursuit of a "high-valued target" by facilitating close-air-support when needed. The week-long joint terminal air controller-centric exercise involves 90 U.S. and coalition personnel with close air support assets from five U.S. and coalition air wings and is designed to prepare U.S. Air Forces Europe and NATO JTACs for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. The Airmen are assigned to 1st Air Support Operations Squadron in Wiesbaden, Germany. Sergeant Thomas is a JTAC and Airman Kelley is a radio operator maintainer and driver.
