Eiichiro Shimabukuro, 77 years old, recalls the aftermath of World War II when the U.S. military worked with Okinawans to rebuild the island's devastated infrastructure and return life to normalcy, during an interview Aug. 12. Mr. Shimabukuro has worked and volunteered at the Kadena Air Base, Japan, clinic since 1950 and was the first Okinawan hired to work there. (U.S. Air Force photo/Tech. Sgt. Rey Ramon)
