explosive ordnance disposal
EOD Airmen take on Warfighter Challenge
Eglin's two-week explosive ordnance disposal exercise brought together largest group of Airmen in the EOD career field.
Air Force transitions to a single combat uniform
Air Force leaders announced the service will move to a single combat utility uniform, adopting the Operational Camouflage Pattern, or OCP, already in use by the Army and Airmen in combat zones and in certain jobs across the Air Force.
Physical therapist strengthens EOD mission readiness
For some Air Force careers, everyday physical demands can have a significant impact on an Airman’s comprehensive fitness in a big way. Explosive ordnance disposal Airmen at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, are working with the 39th Medical Operations Squadron to help reduce the stress that comes with wearing 75-pound protective bomb suits.
Airman earns medal for rescuing double amputee from flood
In total darkness, with temperatures only in the high 30s and in the midst of a monstrous rainstorm, Tech. Sgt. Phillip Dyer waded into rapidly-moving, chest-deep-and-rising waters to save a trapped flood victim on the verge of hypothermia and drowning.
EOD Airman receives Purple Heart
More than 10 years after his injury, Tech. Sgt. Douglas Smits, 90th Civil Engineer Squadron explosive ordnance disposal team leader, received a Purple Heart medal at F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming, Jan. 5, 2018.
Dobbins ARB hosts EOD teams, tests new technology
Dobbins Air Reserve Base hosted the Eastern National Robot Rodeo Aug. 21-25, 2017, which featured explosive ordnance disposal teams from the Air Force, Navy, Army, Cobb County Police Department and the Royal Air Force.
EOD Airman finds balance on the ice
A jolt of energy rushed through his veins. “Hold still, don’t move,” he screamed. A land mine had been dusted off by the impact of his team leader’s right boot. Instantly, training kicked in; Knelange and his team started the procedure to safely get their fellow Airman away from the land mine and back into the vehicle.
Adaptive sports shift outlook on life
“I was sitting at home alone one night and had taken out my pistol; I remember how cool it felt in my hands and knowing I was moments away from taking my life. In that split second, my phone went off with a text from one of my Airmen who said he needed my help getting to work the next morning, and I remember putting down my weapon to be there for him. That next morning, I planned on picking up where I had left off, but received an email from the Air Force Wounded Warrior saying I had been accepted into their program… that text and that email saved my life.”
Active, Reserve Travis AFB EOD support local national parks, law enforcement
Their name brings to mind the stories out of Hollywood blockbusters. Visions of deafening explosions and gun shots spin through the mind as one visualizes a service member crouching over a device, daring the sweat dripping from his forehead not to fall, praying he chooses the right wire to pull. Though this is not the most accurate scenario of what explosive ordnance disposal technicians do, this is what many picture when they hear the name.
AF, Marine and Army EOD techs train, learn from each other
Air Force, Marine and Army explosive ordnance disposal technicians deployed to Southwest Asia came together for the first time to train at an undisclosed location Dec. 14-18. The five-day training exercise included more than 40 staged improvised explosive device scenarios simulating common incidents EOD has encountered in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Threat assessment course prepares EOD leaders
An advanced course at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., is providing future EOD team leaders new, in-depth training on how to defeat these deadly threats overseas and at home.
