Air Force & Space Force announce sweeping changes to maintain superiority amid Great Power Competition

The United States faces a time of consequence marked by significant shifts in the strategic environment. To remain ready, the U.S. Air Force must change.

In early 2024, the Department of the Air Force unveiled sweeping plans for reshaping, refocusing, and reoptimizing the Air Force and Space Force to ensure continued supremacy in their respective domains while better posturing the services to deter and, if necessary, prevail in an era of Great Power Competition. Through a series of 24 DAF-wide key decisions, four core areas which demand the Department’s attention will be addressed: Develop People, Generate Readiness, Project Power and Develop Capabilities.

Today, the Air Force once again finds itself at a critical juncture—an era of Great Power Competition marked by a new security environment, a rapidly evolving character of war, and a formidable competitor. This new era requires understanding its challenges and the attributes needed to succeed.

Embracing change is not a choice; it is a necessity. The Air Force must “reoptimize” into an enterprise prepared for high-end conflicts and long-term strategic competition.

The Goodie Two Shoes foundation provides disadvantaged children with new shoes and socks as well as other items deemed as essential for good health and positive development. Today we're out here at Rose Warren Elementary School and we're outfitting 400 children with brand new shoes and sock and we're giving them some dental hygiene kits too.

Many Airman from Nellis Air Force Base, like Senior Master Sergeant Tammy Killen, volunteer to work with Goodie Two Shoes to help make a difference in their local community.

For many of these kids, this will be the first time they’ve ever picked out their own pair of shoes, a process that Goodie Two Shoes makes incredibly easy for its pint-sized participants.

As we outfit the kids with the Goodie Two Shoes foundation today, the kids come out, we size their feet to make sure that we're looking for a properly fitting pair of shoes for them. We give them a fresh pair of socks to try the shoes on with. They get an additional five pairs of socks to take home, so they get a weeks worth of socks essentially. Then they're paired with a great community volunteer who helps them go through and empowers them with the opportunity to select any brand new pair of shoes, sneakers that they'd like from our large stock of traveling inventory.

Senior Master Sergeant Killen says volunteering with Goodie Two Shoes not only has a positive impact on the kids, but on volunteers as well.

(SMSgt Tammy Killen - 99 ABW Staff Superintendent)
Oh I think it's a fantastic program. I think kids are our most valuable resource and I can't tell you how many event I've been to where the kids just come up to me. As a matter of fact, a few minutes ago, I just had a girl say I've never seen a real, live soldier before, and she just thought it was awesome. So I think a recruiting tool also. You know the kids are excited to see somebody out in uniform in the community, not necessarily just volunteering on the base.

With the help of volunteers like these from Nellis, the Goodie Two Shoes foundation helps over ten-thousand children per year, working towards their goal of building a better foundation, one foot at a time.
