AF implements intel officer retention program

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas (AFNS) -- Eligible intelligence officers have until Sept. 22 to apply for a critical skills retention bonus, or CSRB, implemented by the Air Force this month, Air Force Personnel Center officials said Aug. 7.

Originally approved in 2013 by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Air Force implementation hinged on ongoing force management programs. Having concluded intelligence officer force management actions, designated intelligence year groups are now eligible to apply for the CSRB. Air Force leaders implemented the 2014 Aviator Retention Pay program using the same approach, offering program participation only after required reductions were achieved.

CSRBs help retain high-performing Airmen in mission critical skills and competitive categories, said Maj. Jeffrey Fries, the AFPC intelligence officer assignments.

“We simply can't afford to lose the experience and skills of these intelligence officers who are critical to our national security. The incentives are targeted at retaining the incredible experience resident in these key year groups and is an integral part of the Air Force’s overarching effort to size, shape and stabilize the force,” said Lt. Gen. Robert Otto, the intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance deputy chief of staff .

To be eligible for the CSRB, intelligence captains or majors must have a 14N core Air Force specialty code and must be a graduate of the 14N initial skills training course at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas. Applicants must also have a date of rank to captain or major in the following year group and DOR time frames:

Captain:
- Year group 2004, Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2008
- Year group 2005, Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2009
- Year group 2006, Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2010
- Year group 2007, Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2011

Major:
- Year group 2004, Jan. 1, 2014-Present

To be eligible, applicants must have completed their initial obligation of service incurred when commissioned and must have at least three years remaining on active duty as of their CSRB effective date.

Airmen are not eligible for the CSRB if they are receiving any other retention bonus, are awaiting involuntary separation or a court martial action, or have had their security clearance permanently revoked.

Depending on their grade, years of commissioned service and the bonus option they select, 14N CSRB applicants could be eligible for $12,000, $20,000 or $30,000, which will be paid in equal installments. Officers approved for the retention bonus will incur an active-duty service commitment of two to four years.
