Two years after complications from a massive stroke that forced Senior Airman Chris Fugitt to retire from the Air Force, his warrior spirit enabled him to power past a number of debilitating setbacks, to the point where he attended his first adaptive sports and rehabilitation camp here this week.

Just as service members come from all walks of life, so do the 30 Academy-owned horses an Army veteran and wounded warrior said comforted him when he took part in the Warrior Wellness program here. Retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Jacob Legendre suffers from chronic pain, post-traumatic stress disorder, deafness in one ear and a traumatic brain injury. By connecting with the horses, staff and other combat veterans at the Academy's Equestrian Center, he said he's gained hope and found reasons to keep moving forward.

Chief Master Sgt. Max Grindstaff is among the many Airmen who have benefited from the Air Force's mental health services. He took advantage of the mental health services in 2011 to help him cope with the aftermath of an inside attack while he was deployed to Afghanistan. The chief hopes his story encourages Airmen who witness or experience trauma to take advantage of the Air Force's numerous support programs and get help themselves. Beginning Sept. 28, for seven days, 40 Air Force veteran athletes will compete head-to-head within various adaptive sports for the Warrior Games alongside more than 210 other warriors from the Air Force’s sister services, taking place at the Olympic Training Center, Fort Carson and Garry Barry Stadium at Wasson High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Sept. 28th thru Oct. 4th.
