AF announces OTS selection results

3/6/2013 - JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO - RANDOLPH, Texas (AFNS) -- A total of 247 men and women from across America have earned an opportunity to become Air Force leaders following their selection for an officer's commission, officials here announced today.

Air Force Recruiting Service officials considered 417 applications as part of the Officer Training School Rated Selection Board 13OT02. With the board's selection rate of 59.23 percent, 247 applicants were selected to serve as United States Air Force officers. Of the 247 selected, 40 enlisted members earned the chance to attend OTS and trade their stripes for gold bars as second lieutenants.

As part of the selection process, board members review both objective and subjective factors. Objectively, the board considers each applicant's academic discipline, grade point average and Air Force Officer Qualifying Test scores. Subjectively, board members evaluate work experience, accomplishments, adaptability, character, leadership ability, potential for future growth and other recommendations. For active-duty enlisted members, performance reports and commanders' recommendations are also evaluated.

Three Air Force colonels review every application. The selection process is similar to an Air Force officer promotion board. No single factor leads to an individual's selection or non-selection, according to OTS selection officials.

Members selected can expect to attend Basic Officer Training at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., in 2013.

For more information concerning OTS and the application process, active-duty members should contact their local education office; civilians should contact their nearest Air Force recruiter.

It boils down to economics. The AF will have to spend additional money to train a prior enlisted to become an Officer. They have already made an intial investment for basic training and tech school and then have to spend more money to train for an Officermore . Navy does a great job of taking it's prior enlisted to Officer. It's time AF makes some changes.

How about expanding those that can apply to OTS to age 40-42 for current military members I believe that most of those people that would apply at that age have experienced enough in the miltary to be a be a good leader and have the necessary skills to be a valuable asset. Not everyone follows the traditional path of entering service in their teens and early 20's. I feel that the AF is losing out on some quality officer personnel.

Congrats to all Duke I agree that a greater focus should be put on promoting officers from the enlisted ranks. However I would note that quite a few of these so-called civilians are probably prior-service. Many airmen finish their enlistment term to go to college full-time and then apply for OTS afterwards. This is the path I have chosen and I have multiple friends in the same situation. Again I agree that more focus should be put on prior-service though. I am not saying that this is the only solution to filling our officer billets but the Air Force would absolutely benefit from focusing on their prior-enlisted channels to fill LT slots. While there are commissioning opportunities for prior-enlisted a stronger focus needs to be put on this avenue.

Congrats to all but I have seen some sharp and more than deserving Airmen and NCOs not be selected. I think that civilian list should shrink to allow some of these great enlisted folks move forward. At least until it is 5050. Plus I think the people would prefer to follow a 2nd Lt. that may have some experience already in the military and really understand the enlisted side of the house. Either way we have some of the best people.
