BRIGADIER GENERAL JAMES E. FREYTAG Brigadier General James E. Freytag is deputy commander for strategic systems, Electronic Systems Division, Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass. General Freytag was born in 1936, in Moulton, Texas. He graduated from Texas A&M University in May 1959 with a bachelor of science degree in engineering and was commissioned a second lieutenant through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program. The general received a master's degree in business administration from Auburn University in June 1969. He graduated from Squadron Officer School in 1966, Air Command and Staff College in 1969, and the Air War College in 1975. After a brief tour with industry, General Freytag entered active duty in October 1959 as a logistician with the 303rd Bombardment Wing, Strategic Air Command, Davis Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz. Upon completion of missile training at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, in August 1962, he returned to Davis Monthan Air Force Base with an assignment to the 390th Strategic Missile Wing as a Titan II missile deputy combat crew commander. General Freytag was assigned to the Astronautic Technology and Application Office, 4000th Support Group, Strategic Air Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., in July 1964 with permanent duty at Patrick Air Force Base, Fla. While there he was attached to the 6555th Test Wing, Air Force Systems Command, where he supported the facility activation and initial launches of Titan IIIC boosters. After attending Squadron Officer School from January 1966 to May 1966, General Freytag transferred to the 1st Strategic Aerospace Air Division, Strategic Air Command, Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. He was responsible for all support plans for space programs at Vandenberg. In August 1968 he attended the Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., and upon graduation in July 1969, he was assigned to the Office of Special Projects, Los Angeles Air Force Station, Calif., where he worked with several space satellite programs. Following graduation from the Air War College in May 1975, General Freytag was assigned to Headquarters Air Force Systems Command, Andrews Air Force Base, Md., where he served as a systems officer for various satellite programs. Later he became assistant to the commander for joint service affairs, responsible for all joint service activities, including the secretariat function for the joint logistics commanders. In August 1977 he became the executive officer to the commander, Air Force Systems Command. Returning to Los Angeles Air Force Station in August 1978, he was assigned as the system program director, Defense Satellite Communications Systems program, within the Space Division, Air Force Systems Communications. In February 1982 the general was named deputy, Space Communications Systems. He became commander of the Air Force Wright Aeronautical Laboratories at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, in May 1983. He assumed his present duties in June 1984. General Freytag's military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal. He also wears the Master Missileman Badge. He was promoted to brigadier general Sept. 1, 1984, with same date of rank. (Current as of June 1985)
