BRIGADIER GENERAL ARTHUR L. MCCULLOUGH Arthur Lee McCullough was born in Milwaukee, Wis., in 1896. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers July 2, 1920. He then attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from which he received a civil engineering degree. After duty at various Army installations with the Corps of Engineers, General McCullough was detailed with the Air Corps in September 1925. He received his wings at Kelly Field, Texas, in 1926, and served with the Air Corps until 1928 when he resigned his Regular commission to enter civilian aviation. After a brief period with the Pitcairn Aviation Company of Georgia, General McCullough went to Cuba as a pilot for Compania Nacional Cubana de Aviacion Curtiss. In 1932 the Cuban company became a part of the Pan American Airways system, at which time General McCullough was moved to the Western Division. In 1939, he was transferred to the Atlantic Division in Baltimore, and a year later was checked out as a Master of Ocean Flying. From Jan. 9, 1929, General McCullough held a Reserve commission in the Air Corps. He was called to active duty in August 1942 as a major and assigned as assistant operations officer, assistant inspector general, and then operations officer of the First Troop Carrier Command at Stout Field, Ind. General McCullough served in Europe for a brief period during the Sicilian Airborne Campaign, and in 1944 was sent to the China-Burma-India theater with the Combat Cargo Task Force. On being released from active duty Nov. 27, 1945, General McCullough returned to Pan American World Airways as one of the ranking captains. He flew trans-Atlantic clippers from New York to Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and was one of the veteran pilots assigned to the new giant Strato-cruiser. He has more than 14,000 hours flying time of which more than 3,000 hours are military. General McCullough was recalled to active duty May 1, 1951, as commanding general of the 514th Troop Carrier Wing, Medium, with headquarters at Mitchel Air Force Base, N.Y. In February 1953, he assumed command of the 313th Troop Carrier Wing, also at Mitchel Air Force Base. In September 1953, he was assigned as special assistant to the commander, Continental Air Command, Mitchel Air Force Base, N.Y. In January 1954, he assumed command of the 1503rd Air Transport Wing, Military Air Transport Service, at Haneda Air Base, Japan. General McCullough has been awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal and Air Medal with oak leaf cluster. (Up to date as of January 1954)
