BRIGADIER GENERAL HUGH E. WILD Brigadier General Hugh E. Wild is commander of the 435th Military Airlift Support Wing with headquarters at Rhein-Main Air Base, Germany. The wing provides support for strategic airlift to and within the European area through a network of units stationed along airlift routes stretching from England to India and Norway to Ethiopia. He acts as adviser to the commander in chief Europe on Military Airlift Command airlift matters and, in this regard, conducts an airlift joint training program (the MAC Wing/Army Division Affiliation Program). General Wild was born in Elmwood, Wis., in 1918. He later moved to Iowa and graduated in 1940 from the University of Iowa with a bachelor of arts degree in general science. He entered the Army Air Corps in December 1940 as an aviation cadet, and received his pilot wings and commission as a second lieutenant in August 1941. Today he is a transport pilot with command pilot rating and is on active flying status. During World War II, General Wild participated in combat action in the China-Burma-India and Asiatic-Pacific Theaters of Operations. From July 1942 to March 1944, he participated in 60 aerial missions with a total of 360 combat flying hours. He returned to the United States and after a few months volunteered for a second overseas tour which included the invasion of the Philippine Islands in 1944. Beginning in 1948 he spent four years in the Strategic Air Command where he commanded a squadron of B-29 and B-36 aircraft. Since 1955 he has been assigned to MAC except for one year in Southeast Asia. He served overseas tours in Hawaii and was deputy chief of staff for maintenance, Pacific Division, Military Air Transport Service. From 1958 to 1962 General Wild held consecutive posts at Headquarters Military Airlift Command as chief of the Logistic Plans Division and assistant deputy chief of staff for materiel. In July 1962 he went to the Azores where he became deputy commander, U.S. Forces. General Wild was commander of the 62d Military Airlift Wing, McChord Air Force Base, Wash., from August 1964 to November 1966. He participated in joint exercises such as Gold Fire and Polar Strike. In December 1966 he went to Southeast Asia and served as vice commander then commander of the 834th Air Division. The division was responsible for all tactical airlift of men, supplies and equipment in South Vietnam and averaged more than 1,000 sorties a day and 100,000 tons a month in combat airlift. General Wild assumed command of the 322d Air Division at High Wycombe Air Station, England, in January 1968 and when the 435th Military Airlift Support Wing was organized in December 1968, he became commander. During the recent NATO "dual-basing" exercise Reforger I/Crested Cap I, he served as the senior commander of the five European Airlift Control Elements handling the airlift traffic flow. His major service schools include the Command and General Staff School, Fort Leavenworth, Kan., 1945; Air Command and Staff School, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., 1948; Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Va., 1952; and the Air Force Manpower Management Course, The George Washington University, 1954. He was deputy director and deputy commandant of the Squadron Officer School of the Air University for three years, 1952 to 1955. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster, Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters and Army Commendation Ribbon.
