MAJOR GENERAL JAMES H. WALSH Major General James H. Walsh was born in 1911 in Carbondale, Pa. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy June 12, 1935 and was commissioned in the field artillery. After graduating from Advanced Flying School, Kelly Field, Texas ,in October 1936, the general was transferred to the Air Corps and assigned to the 6th Bomb Group, France Field, Canal Zone. From May 1939 to January 1942 he was assigned to the 2nd and 41st bomb groups, Langley Field, Va. During the early phases of World War II he commanded the 97th Bomb Group in England. In October 1942 he was appointed operations deputy of the 12th Bomb Command and in February 1943 he was named operations officer of the 47th Bomb Wing in Africa and Italy. General Walsh returned to the United States in February 1944 to become director of operations and training, Third Air Force, Tampa, Fla. From October 1945 to August 1949 he was assigned to Air Force headquarters in the Air Intelligence Division. Following graduation from the National War College, Washington, D.C., in June 1950, he was assigned to Strategic Air Command Headquarters, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., as director of intelligence. General Walsh's next assignment was to the United Kingdom where he commanded SAC's 7th Air Division in 1955 and 1956. He returned to the United States in March 1957 and was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force as deputy assistant chief of staff for intelligence and later became assistant chief of staff. He returned to Strategic Air Command Headquarters in July 1961 to become chief of staff. In July 1962 General Walsh was named Eighth Air Force deputy commander with headquarters at Westover Air Force Base, Mass. His decorations include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters and the Brazilian order of the Southern Cross. He is rated a command pilot. General Walsh was named a Knight of St. George by Pope Pius XII and is a member of the Papal Household. (Up to date as of January 1963)
