BRIGADIER GENERAL MICHAEL G. VERGAMINI

Brigadier General Michael G. Vergamini is commander, U.S. Air Force Recruiting Service, and deputy chief of staff for recruiting service and commissioning programs, Headquarters Air Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas.

General Vergamini was born in 1941, in Iowa City, Iowa, and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School, Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 1959. He earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Creighton University in 1963 and a master's degree in business administration from The George Washington University in 1969. He completed Squadron Officer School in 1970, Armed Forces Staff College in 1974 and National War College in 1984.

The general was commissioned through Officer Training School, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, in February 1964. His first assignment was as a personnel officer with the 4500th Consolidated Base Personnel Office, Langley Air Force Base, Va. In July 1967 he moved to Headquarters Tactical Air Command, Langley, as officer in charge of the Airman Assignments Branch.

In September 1968 General Vergamini entered The George Washington University and graduated in September 1969. He then was assigned to Tan Son Nhut Air Base, South Vietnam, first as quality control chief with the 377th Consolidated Base Personnel Office, then in June 1970 as airman assignments division chief, Headquarters 7th Air Force.

The general was assigned to the Airman Policy Division, Air Force Military Personnel Center, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, in December 1970 as an assignments policy officer. From July 1972 to January 1974 he served as assistant executive officer to the commander, Air Force Military Personnel Center.

After completing Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Va., in June 1974, he was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., as an Air Staff action officer for the Directorate of Personnel Plans. In March 1975 he became staff director for the Air Force Management Improvement Group, an ad hoc study group established by the Air Force chief of staff. In August 1975 he was assigned to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Manpower and Reserve Affairs as the military assistant.

General Vergamini was assigned to Headquarters Air Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base, in May 1977. He served successively as assistant for readiness, assistant chief of staff and executive officer to the commander. In February 1981 he became commander of the 3506th U.S. Air Force Recruiting Group, Mather Air Force Base, Calif. He was responsible for Air Force recruiting efforts in the Western United States, Alaska and the Pacific. In August 1983 he entered the National War College, Washington, D.C.

In July 1984 the general returned to the Air Force Military Personnel Center, this time as director of assignments. He became deputy chief of staff for personnel, Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe, Ramstein Air Base, West Germany, in June 1987. In August 1989 he became director of manpower and personnel, J-1, the Joint Staff, Washington, D.C. He assumed his present command in August 1991.

The general's military awards and decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, and Air Force Commendation Medal.

He was promoted to brigadier general Aug. 1, 1989, with same date of rank.
