MAJOR GENERAL ROBERT W. NORRIS

Major General Robert W. Norris is judge advocate general, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.

General Norris was born in 1932, in Birmingham, Ala., and graduated from high school from Marion (Ala.) Military Institute in 1950. He attended the University of Alabama, receiving an undergraduate degree in commerce and business administration, and a law degree (juris doctor) in 1955. In 1979 he received a master of law degree in tax law from the National Law Center, The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. He has completed Air Command and Staff College, Air War College and National War College.

Receiving his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program, he entered active duty as a second lieutenant at Amarillo Air Force Base, Texas, in March 1955. The following year he moved to Ladd Air Force Base, Alaska, where he served as an assistant staff judge advocate until his release from active duty in 1957.

The general was recalled to active duty in 1959 and served as assistant staff judge advocate and staff judge advocate at Brooks Air Force Base, Texas, until 1963. From 1963 to 1967, he was assigned to Headquarters Pacific Air Forces, Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, as deputy director of civil law.

After graduating from Air Command and Staff College in June 1968, General Norris became director of civil law at Headquarters Tactical Air Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va. From August 1969 to August 1974, he served in the Career Management Division, Office of the Judge Advocate General at Air Force headquarters. He became chief of that division in 1973.

Following graduation from the National War College in July 1975, General Norris was assigned as staff judge advocate, 314th Air Division, Osan Air Base, South Korea. He returned to Air Force headquarters in August 1976 and served as chief, Defense Services Division, then chief of the International Law Division and finally as director of civil law. In August 1982 the general was named staff judge advocate at Headquarters Strategic Air Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb. He became deputy judge advocate general at Air Force headquarters in November 1983. He assumed his present duties in September 1985.

His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal. General Norris is admitted to practice law in the courts of Alabama, United States Court of Military Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court.

He was promoted to major general Nov. 16, 1983, with date of rank Sept. 1, 1980.
