LIEUTENANT GENERAL LEWIS L. MUNDELL Lieutenant General Lewis Leo Mundell is vice commander of Air Force Logistics Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. In this position, he is second to the AFLC Commander in accomplishing the command mission: To keep the Air Force's aerospace weapon systems ready for action. AFLC must perform this mission at the lowest possible cost to the taxpayers and assure top combat efficiency. Born in Ordway, Colo., in 1910, General Mundell graduated with honors from the University of Colorado in 1932 with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. He was a graduate student for a year, in 1941, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and took the Advanced Management Course of the Graduate School of Business at Harvard University in 1955. General Mundell entered military service in February 1933, as a flying cadet and received his wings in 1934. During World War II he was assigned to the U.S. Military Mission in Moscow and to Headquarters U.S. Strategic Air Forces, Europe. For the past 12 years he has been associated with Air Force logistics, beginning with his appointment as deputy commander of San Antonio Air Materiel Area at Kelly Air Force Base, Texas, in July 1954. He has been inspector general of Air Materiel Command (AFLC's predecessor) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio; commander, Spain Air Materiel Area, Madrid, Spain; and commander, Southern Air Materiel Area (Europe), Nouasseur Air Base, Morocco. His more recent career included five years as commander of two of the largest Air Force logistics centers -- San Antonio Air Materiel Area, Kelly Air Force Base, Texas, for one and one-half years; and Oklahoma City Air Materiel Area, Tinker Air Force Base, Okla., for three and one-half years. Returning to Headquarters, AFLC in January 1964, he was director of operations for one and one-half years. General Mundell, a command pilot, became vice commander of Air Force Logistics Command Aug. 1, 1965. His decorations include the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters and the French Croix de Guerre with Palm.
