MAJOR GENERAL JIMMEY R. MORRELL Major General Jimmey R. Morrell is commander, 45th Space Wing, and director for the Eastern Range, Patrick Air Force Base, Fla. General Morrell was born in 1946, in Morgan City, La. He earned a bachelor of science degree from Nicholls State University in 1968 and a master of arts degree in economics from the University of South Dakota in 1975. The general completed Squadron Officer School in 1972, Air Command and Staff College in 1977, and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1985. He graduated from the Reserve Officer Training Corps program and was assigned to Air Intelligence Officers School in 1969. The general then transferred to the 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing, Bien Hoa Air Base, South Vietnam, as a wing intelligence officer, and flew more than 100 combat hours in various aircraft. In May 1970 he was assigned to Headquarters Strategic Air Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., as a current intelligence officer. In September 1975 he was assigned to Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., as a Minuteman missile combat crew commander. During this tour he was chief of upgrade training, recurring training and wing executive officer with the 44th Strategic Missile Wing. Upon completion of Air Command and Staff College In 1977, General Morrell served as assistant chief of staff for the Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. In May 1979 General Morrell moved to Washington, D.C., to serve in space systems, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force. From 1979 to 1983 he served consecutively as the executive officer, deputy for legislative liaison and as deputy for national security affairs. He was chairman of a U.S.-U.S.S.R. space net assessment committee that produced new policies on U.S. space launch capabilities and technology transfer. From July 1983 to July 1984 General Morrell was a White House senior policy analyst in the Office of Science and Technology, and served as adviser on all national security space programs to the president's science adviser. He was responsible for the first national policy on commercialization of expendable launch vehicles and its associated national space policy directive. In 1986 General Morrell served as Air Force Space Command's director of space operations, overseeing all space combat operations, including the establishment of command and control procedures for space defense and space surveillance operations. After overseeing the transfer of these activities to the newly established U.S. Space Command in March 1986, he served as the command's director of space systems and activities. In this position he was responsible for the first transition of an operational satellite system from Air Force Systems Command to Air Force Space Command. In July 1987 General Morrell was reassigned to the Pentagon as the military assistant for space to the secretary of the Air Force, where he served as the adviser to the secretary on all technical, programmatic and operational issues affecting national security space programs. In December 1988 General Morrell assumed command of the 2nd Space Wing, Falcon Air Force Base, Colo. The wing is responsible for command and control of the Air Force Satellite Control Network and the satellite control mission for Air Force Space Command. During his tenure, the unit was awarded its first Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and was responsible for the initial operational test and evaluation of nine major space systems. In October 1990 he became commander of the 9th Space Division, Patrick Air Force Base. The division was responsible for overseeing East and West Coast space launch operations. He assumed his current command in September 1991. The general's military awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Combat Readiness Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He wears the Master Space and Senior Missile Operations badges. He was promoted to brigadier general April 1, 1991, with same date of rank. (Current as of June 1992)
