MAJOR GENERAL JOHN M. MCNABB Major General John Malcolm McNabb is the deputy chief of staff for intelligence (J-2) for the North American Air Defense Command/Continental Air Defense Command, and for the Aerospace Defense Command. These headquarters are collocated at Ent Air Force Base, Colo. General McNabb was born in Detroit, Mich., in 1917. He graduated from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa., in 1939 with a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering and, through the Reserve Officers Training Corps, was commissioned as second lieutenant. Early in 1941 General McNabb entered flying school at Parks Air College in Illinois and later went to Randolph and Brooks fields, Texas, and received his pilot wings at Brooks in October 1941. During World War II, he served through 1943 in various tactical flying organizations at a number of air bases in the United States. He was transferred to the European Theater of Operations and during 1944 and 1945 flew P-51 Mustang aircraft while serving as commander of the 380th and then 350th Fighter Squadrons and later the 160th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron in England, France, Belgium and Germany. Following World War II in February 1946, he was sent to Wright Field, Ohio, where he remained through 1948, and served as chief, Maintenance Data Section of the Directorate of Maintenance Engineering, Headquarters Air Materiel Command. During this period he attended the Air Command and Staff School, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., and graduated in December 1948. In February 1949 General McNabb returned to England and became commander of the U.S. Air Force base at Burtonwood, which had been reactivated in support of the Berlin airlift. In March 1952 he moved to Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., as commander of the 363d Tactical Reconnaissance Group. Between March 1953 and August 1956, he served as chief, Reconnaissance Division, Headquarters Tactical Air Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va. He graduated from the National War College, Washington, D.C., in June 1957 and was assigned as chief of the Tactical Air Division, Directorate of Operational Requirements, Headquarters U.S. Air Force. In July 1960 he went to Allied Air Forces Southern Europe headquarters, where from 1960 to 1963 he was assistant chief of staff for operations, and from 1963 until July 1964 he served as deputy chief of staff, plans. Between August 1964 and July 1965, General McNabb served as commander, 3525th Pilot Training Wing, Air Training Command, at Williams Air Force Base, Ariz. He went to Headquarters Air Training Command at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, in August 1965 as deputy chief of staff, technical training, and in January 1967 assumed duties as chief of staff. He became commander of Sheppard Technical Training Center, Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, in July 1967. General McNabb again was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force in August 1969 as director of plans, Office of Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans and Operations. In February 1970 he assumed duties as the assistant deputy chief of staff, plans and operations, with responsibilities for developing broad Air Force concepts, policies, and long-range objectives; for formulating plans and operations in implementation thereof; and for justifying these plans and operations to the Department of Defense and other governmental agencies. In January 1971 General McNabb was transferred to Headquarters Pacific Air Forces at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, and assumed duties as deputy chief of staff, plans, and in February 1972 became chief of staff. From July 1972 to October 1973, General McNabb served as deputy chief of staff for plans and operations, J02, for the U.S. Pacific Command with headquarters in Hawaii. During June 1973, he assumed the additional duty as commander, Det. 1, 1131st U.S. Air Force Special Activity Squadron. General McNabb became deputy chief of staff, intelligence, J-2, North American Defense Command/Continental Air Defense Command, and deputy chief of staff, intelligence for Aerospace Defense Command in November 1973. These headquarters are collocated at Ent Air Force Base, Colo. His military decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal, Officer of the Crown with palm (Belgium), Croix de Guerre (Belgium), Belgium Fourragere, and the Croix de Guerre with palm (France). A command pilot, General McNabb has flown P-39, P-40, P-51, B-25, B-26, F-5, T-38, F-80, F-84F, F-100, and F-104 aircraft. General McNabb's hometown is East River Road, Grosse Ile, Mich. He was promoted to the grade of major general effective March 15, 1968, with date of rank Jan. 7, 1964.
