BRIGADIER GENERAL MICHAEL A. "MICK" MCAULIFFE Brigadier General Michael A. McAuliffe is deputy chief of staff for civil engineering, Headquarters Air Combat Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va. General McAuliffe was born in 1941, in Ashland, Wis., and grew up in Salina, Kan. He earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Kansas State University in 1965 and a master of science degree in industrial management from The George Washington University in 1977. He completed Armed Forces Staff College as a distinguished graduate in 1979, Air War College in 1983, and the Harvard University Program for Defense Senior Managers in 1987. The general also received the Society of American Military Engineers' Newman Medal for having made the most outstanding contribution to Air Force engineering during 1987. A distinguished graduate of the Reserve Officer Training Corps program, he was commissioned as a regular officer in August 1965. He then was assigned to the Air Force Regional Civil Engineer, Portland, Ore., as a project engineer. In October 1966 he transferred to the Air Force Regional Civil Engineer, San Francisco, where he was a project and construction engineer. In April 1968 he served as a civil engineering planner on Prime BEEF Team 71, Osan Air Base, South Korea, following capture of the Navy ship Pueblo by North Korea. In January 1969 General McAuliffe was transferred to South Vietnam and served as chief of design, deputy chief of staff civil engineering, Headquarters 7th Air Force. He and his staff were responsible for all major Air Force engineering designs there. From April 1970 to August 1974 he was commander of the 7002nd Civil Engineering Flight, Ramstein Air Base, West Germany. He was responsible for all activities associated with carrying out major design and construction of projects by an organization composed of 245 German and third-country nationals. Returning to the United States in August 1974, General McAuliffe was assigned as a staff engineer and planner, Environmental Planning Division, Directorate of Engineering and Services, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. He was responsible for formulating Air Force policy for air base development, community facilities improvement, and for the environmental impact evaluation process. In June 1977 he was selected to be executive officer to the director of engineering and services, Air Force headquarters, where he served until he entered the Armed Forces Staff College in January 1979. Upon graduation in July 1979, he was assigned as commander of the 834th Civil Engineering Squadron, Hurlburt Field, Fla. While the Hurlburt Field base civil engineer, he also served as a consultant to the Air Force's Ballistic Missile Office during preparation of the Peacekeeper (M-X) environmental impact statement. In August 1982 he entered the Air War College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. In June 1983 the general was reassigned to the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics and Engineering, Air Force headquarters, as chief of the Housing and Services Division, Directorate of Engineering and Services. He was responsible for developing, defending and executing the Air Force's worldwide family housing program. In June 1985 he was assigned as chief of the Programs Division, Directorate of Engineering and Services. He also served as chairman of the Air Staff Board Facilities Panel. After leaving the Pentagon in June 1988, General McAuliffe became deputy chief of staff for engineering and services, Headquarters Air Force Logistics Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. In March 1990 he became deputy chief of staff for engineering and services, Headquarters Tactical Air Command, Langley Air Force Base. He assumed his current position in June 1992 when Tactical Air Command was deactivated. The general's military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and Air Force Commendation Medal. He was promoted to brigadier general March 1, 1991, with same date of rank. (Current as of June 1992)
