BRIGADIER GENERAL CHRIS C. MANN

Brigadier General Chris C. Mann is deputy director of personnel plans for human resources development, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Personnel, Headquarters U.S. Air Force.

General Mann was born in Montgomery County, Pa., in 1927. She graduated from Germantown High School, Philadelphia, Pa., in 1945, then attended Temple University, where she received a bachelor of fine arts degree in 1949 and a bachelor of science degree in 1950. She earned a master's degree in education from Northwestern State College in 1962 and graduated from the National War College in 1974.

General Mann received a direct commission and entered on active duty in June 1953, then attended Officer Basic Military Training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Her first assignment was as base personnel services officer, Luke Air Force Base, Ariz. In 1954, General Mann went to North Africa as a personal affairs officer. Returning to the United States in September 1956, she was assigned to Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., as a special services officer. In September 1957, she moved to Hill Air Force Base, Utah, and served consecutively as personnel officer and administrative officer for the 2700th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Squadron, 2700th Explosive Ordnance Group, and 2705th Air Munitions Wing.

General Mann also served in the personnel field on the following assignments: chief, Data Control, England Air Force Base, La., 1960-62; chief, Career Control, Clark Air Base, Republic of the Philippines, 1962-63; and chief, Career Control Branch, Consolidated Base Personnel Office, 363d Combat Support Group, Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., 1963-65.

She was then transferred to the 4420th Combat Support Group at Hurlburt Field, Fla., where she was chief of the Consolidated Base Personnel Office from 1965 to 1968 and director of personnel from 1968 to 1969.

In July 1969 she was assigned to the Air Force Military Personnel Center, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, and served in the Directorate of Personnel Resources and Distribution as a career development staff officer and as chief, Palace Man.

General Mann was reassigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., in August 1971 as a management system plans officer in the Directorate of Personnel Planning. She later became chief of the Classification and Evaluation Standards Branch.

In August 1973, General Mann had the distinction of being the first Air Force woman to attend the National War College at Fort McNair, Washington, D.C. After graduation in July 1974, she assumed command of the 3504th USAF Recruiting Group at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

General Mann was appointed deputy director of personnel plans for human resources development, in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Personnel, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, in July 1975.

Her military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon with oak leaf cluster.

She was promoted to the grade of brigadier general Sept. 1, 1975, with date of rank Aug. 19, 1975.
