MAJOR GENERAL NATHAN J. LINDSAY

Maj. Gen. Nathan J. Lindsay is director of special projects, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, and assistant vice commander, Headquarters Space Systems Division, Los Angeles Air Force Base, Calif.

General Lindsay was born in 1936, in Monroe, Wis. He earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering in 1958 and a master of science degree in mechanical engineering in 1965, both from the University of Wisconsin, and a master of science degree in systems management from the University of Southern California in 1976. The general completed Armed Forces Staff College in 1971 and the Defense Systems Management School in 1973.

He received his commission through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program at the University of Wisconsin and entered the Air Force in January 1959. After completing the Ammunition Officer Course at Lowry Air Force Base, Colo., he served at the U.S. Air Forces Europe Weapons Center, Wheelus Air Base, Libya, as the base munitions officer. In December 1960 he transferred to Lindsey Air Station, West Germany, as a staff officer for conventional munitions requirements and logistics at USAFE headquarters.

The general entered the Air Force Institute of Technology in June 1963 as a graduate student in heat transfer and thermodynamics. After graduating in February 1965, he was assigned to the Propulsion Directorate, Titan III System Program Office, Space Systems Division, Los Angeles Air Force Station, Calif., as a development project officer for large solid rockets.

In June 1969 General Lindsay was assigned to the Development Division, Air Force Armament Laboratory, Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., as chief of the Guns and Rockets Branch. He graduated from Armed Forces Staff College in January 1971 and was assigned to Headquarters Air Force Systems Command, Andrews Air Force Base, Md., as an inspector in the Office of the Inspector General. He completed Defense Systems Management School in June 1973 as a distinguished graduate.

From July 1973 to August 1978 General Lindsay served consecutively as assistant deputy for policy, chief of the Launch Vehicle Integration Division, and deputy director of launch systems integration, Office of Special Projects, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, Los Angeles Air Force Station.

The general transferred to the Office of Space Systems, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, Washington, D.C., where he was responsible for space systems policy, plans and security. In November 1980 he returned to Los Angeles Air Force Station as director of operations support and integration within Space Systems Division. In April 1982 he became assistant deputy commander for space operations.

When the Los Angeles-based space operations functions were combined with the space launch and control system acquisition organization in March 1983, General Lindsay became assistant deputy commander for launch and control systems. He also served in a dual capacity as deputy for mission integration. In December 1984 he was assigned as commander of the Eastern Space and Missile Center, Patrick Air Force Base, Fla. In June 1986 he became deputy commander of launch and control systems at Space Systems Division headquarters, where he was responsible for acquisition of all Air Force launch vehicles, management of the Air Force elements of the space shuttle program, and management oversight of the Air Force Satellite Control Network and supporting systems acquisition. He assumed his present duties in February 1987.

The general's military awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Joint Service Commendation Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster. He also wears the Master Space and Master Missile badges. The general was chosen as an honorary chief master sergeant in 1986.

He was promoted to major general Oct. 1, 1988, with same date of rank.
