MAJOR GENERAL (DR.) STANLEY C. KOLODNY

Major General (Dr.) Stanley C. Kolodny is assistant surgeon general for dental services, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.

General Kolodny was born in 1923, in New York City and received his diploma from Erasmus Hall High School in 1940. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1944 with a bachelor of arts degree and received his doctorate in dental surgery from Baylor University's College of Dentistry, Dallas, in 1947.

He was commissioned in the U.S. Army in 1951 and initially assigned as a battalion dental officer with the 529th Field Artillery Observation Battalion. He remained with that unit on its reassignment to Germany until his release from active duty in November 1954.

In February 1956 General Kolodny returned to active duty with the U.S. Air Force and was assigned to the 4167th U.S. Air Force Hospital, Travis Air Force Base, Calif. In July 1958 he began a residency in oral surgery at the University of Illinois, Chicago, completing his training in October 1961 and receiving a master of science degree in oral surgery.

His other assignments included duty with the 615th U.S. Air Force Dispensary, Ent Air Force Base, Colo., as coordinator of the Cogswell Oral Surgery Course until June 1965 when he transferred to the Air Force hospital, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, as chief of oral surgery. In July 1966 he was assigned to the Air Force hospital, Carswell Air Force Base, Texas, as chief of oral surgery and later as base dental surgeon.

He was assigned to Wilford Hall U.S. Air Force Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, in June 1969 where he served as chairman of the Department of Oral Surgery. In June 1975 General Kolodny become director of dental services at Wilford Hall. He transferred to the Air Force hospital at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, in June 1977 as chief of dental services and deputy hospital commander. He assumed his present duties in August 1979.

General Kolodny's military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award ribbon with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award ribbon and Humanitarian Service Medal.

The general is a member of the American Society of Oral and Maxillo-facial Surgeons, Society of Air Force Clinical Surgeons, American Dental Association, American Academy of Oral Pathology and the American Association of Dental Schools. He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists and is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral Surgery. He has been a consultant to the surgeon general in Graduate Education and Oral Surgery. He was clinical professor of oral surgery in the Department of Dentistry, University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston, and clinical associate professor of oral surgery at the University of Texas Medical School, San Antonio, Texas, from 1969 to 1977. General Kolodny represented the U.S. Air Force as delegate to the American Society of Oral and Maxillo-facial Surgeons from 1965 to 1970 and again in 1974. He co-authored a chapter on osteogenesis enhancement in "Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy," as well as authoring and co-authoring numerous articles in the specialty of oral surgery.

He was promoted to major general Aug. 1, 1981, with date of rank April 1, 1978.
