MAJOR GENERAL LARRY M. KILLPACK Major General Larry M. Killpack is assistant deputy chief of staff, manpower and personnel, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. General Killpack was born in 1925, in Huntington, Utah, and graduated from Granite High School, Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1943. He received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering (aeronautical option) as an honor graduate of the University of Utah in 1949 and, as a distinguished military graduate of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps program, was awarded a regular commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He earned a master of business administration degree (with distinction) from Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration in 1961, and was awarded a master's degree in international affairs from The George Washington University in 1966. He entered pilot training at Randolph Field, Texas, in June 1949, and graduated in August 1950 at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. He then was assigned to the 86th Bombardment Wing in Germany where he flew F-84 and F-86 aircraft. In October 1953 he returned to Nellis Air Force Base, where he served successively until 1959 as a flightline maintenance officer with the 3592nd Maintenance Squadron, maintenance standardization officer with the 3595th Maintenance and Supply Group and as commander of the 3598th Flight Line Maintenance Squadron. He attended Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration under the Air Force Institute of Technology program from September 1959 to July 1961. General Killpack then was assigned to the Electronic Systems Division of the Air Force Systems Command at L.G. Hanscom Field, Mass., with the responsibility for Air Force management relationships with the MITRE Corporation, Systems Development Corporation and Lincoln Laboratories of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He entered the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Washington, D.C., in August 1964. In July 1965 General Killpack was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Systems and Logistics, as a project officer. In April 1968 he became chief of the Cost Economic Information Branch, Materiel Program Group, and the Air Force focal point for the development of management systems specifications to be applied in large weapons systems contracts throughout the Department of Defense. In May 1968 he was transferred to Headquarters Air Force Systems Command, Andrews Air Force Base, Md., where as director of cost analysis, he implemented the previously developed Management system specifications. In October 1968 he was appointed vice commander, 15th Tactical Fighter Wing, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., flying F-4E aircraft. General Killpack become commander of the 12th Tactical Fighter Wing, Phu Cat Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, in April 1970, flying F-4D aircraft engaged in interdiction and close air support roles in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. In October 1970 he was assigned as commander, 8th Tactical Fighter Wing, Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, commanding six combat squadrons including F-4D, AC-130 and B-57G aircraft. General Killpack flew a total of 220 combat missions with the 8th and 12th tactical fighter wings. In September 1971 he was appointed assistant comptroller of the Air Force for accounting and finance, and commander, Air Force Accounting and Finance Center, Denver, Colo., charged with responsibility for developing and implementing the Air Force Joint Uniform Military Pay System. In June 1974 General Killpack was assigned as vice commander, 12th Air Force, with headquarters at Bergstrom Air Force Base, Texas, and in September 1975 become the vice commander of Air Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. General Killpack assumed his current position as assistant deputy chief of staff, manpower and personnel in August 1977. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters; Distinguished Flying Cross; Air Medal with 15 oak leaf clusters; Air Force Commendation Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with service star; and Republic of Vietnam Medal of Civic Action, First Class. He was promoted to the grade of major general on April 24, 1974, with date of rank July 1, 1971. General Killpack's hometown is Salt Lake City, Utah. (Current as of December 1978)
