BRIGADIER GENERAL ROGER A. JONES

Brigadier General Roger A. Jones is staff judge advocate, Strategic Air Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb.

General Jones was born in 1938, in Cape Girardeau, Mo. In 1939 he moved to Salem, Ill., where he graduated from Salem Community High School in 1956. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in history and political science in 1960 and a juris doctor degree in 1962, both from the University of Illinois, and a master of laws degree in environmental law, with highest honors, from The George Washington University in 1973. He completed Squadron Officer School in 1968, Air Command and Staff College in 1973, Armed Forces Staff College in 1975 and Air War College in 1977.

He was commissioned in 1960 through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program. After graduation from law school, he entered active duty as a second lieutenant in March 1963 and was assigned to Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska. There he served as claims officer and chief of civil law in the base legal office. He was assigned as chief of real estate and claims, Headquarters 7th Air Force, Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, from May 1967 to May 1968. Upon returning to the United States, he was assigned to Headquarters Aerospace Defense Command, Ent Air Force Base, Colo., as chief of international law.

In December 1970 he became chief of the Officer Branch, Career Plans and Management Division, Office of the Judge Advocate General, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. In that position he was responsible for monitoring the assignments and careers of more than 800 judge advocates in the grades of captain through lieutenant colonel.

After completing Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Va., in August 1975, General Jones became staff judge advocate at Royal Air Force Station Upper Heyford, England. In May 1978 he became staff judge advocate at Homestead Air Force Base, Fla. The general moved to Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., to serve as staff judge advocate, U.S. Air Force Tactical Fighter Weapons Center, in January 1981.

In August 1984 he became deputy staff judge advocate, SAC headquarters, and in October 1984 moved to Barksdale Air Force Base, La., as staff judge advocate for SAC's 8th Air Force. He became staff judge advocate for Headquarters Air Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, in June 1985. General Jones moved to Langley Air Force Base, Va., in June 1986 as staff judge advocate for Headquarters Tactical Air Command. He assumed his present position in June 1988.

His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, and Air Force Commendation Medal. General Jones is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Illinois, the U.S. Court of Military Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States. He has been certified as trial and defense counsel and military judge by the judge advocate general of the Air Force.

He was promoted to brigadier general July 1, 1988, with same date of rank.
