MAJOR GENERAL ALBERT G. HEWITT Albert George Hewitt was born in Winnipeg, Canada in 1903 and graduated from high school there in 1920. Enlisting in the Army Air Corps on July 2, 1923, he served at various stations in the United States, Hawaii and the Philippine Islands for the next 18 years, rising to the rank of master sergeant. He was naturalized on March 7, 1941. Appointed a warrant officer (junior grade) in the Air Corps on Oct. 1, 1941, General Hewitt was assigned to the 29th Bomb Group at Gowen Field, Idaho as engineering officer. Receiving his Reserve commission as a first lieutenant on April 21, 1942 he became supply officer of that group. In that capacity he was transferred to the 15th Bomb Wing at Sioux City Army Air Base, Iowa in September 1942; to the 20th Bomber Command at Smoky Hill Field, Salina, Kan., the following July; and that October to the Second Air Force at Colorado Springs, Colo. General Hewitt went to Europe in January 1944 to become supply officer of the 41st Combat Bomb Wing, and in November of 1944 was appointed executive officer. Two months later he became chief of the Maintenance Division of the Eighth Air Force Service Command there and assumed command of the 44th Air Depot Group in the European Theater in November 1945. The following July he became chief of the Maintenance Division at Tinker Field, Okla.; was appointed deputy for maintenance in January 1947; and in June 1948 was named director of maintenance at Tinker. He entered the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at Washington, D.C. in August 1948 and graduated the following June. Upon graduation the general was assigned to the Air Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio as acting deputy chief of the Maintenance Division, becoming acting chief in February 1950 and deputy chief that May. In March 1952 he was designated vice commander of the Far East Air Materiel Command at Tachikawa, Japan (renamed the Far East Air Logistic Force that July.) Transferred to Air Force headquarters at Washington, D.C., in September 1954, General Hewitt was named director of maintenance engineering in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Materiel. His decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, French Croix de Guerre, and the Order of the British Empire (Honorary Commander). (Up to date as of January 1957)
