MAJOR GENERAL DONALD L. HARDY Donald Linwood Hardy, executive director, supply operations, of the Defense Supply Agency, was born in Chicago, Ill., in 1908. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy June 10, 1932, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Coast Artillery Corps. Entering Air Corps Primary Flying School at Randolph Field, Texas, General Hardy graduated from the Air Corps Advance Flying School at Kelly Field, Texas, a year later. Ordered to Luke Field, Hawaii, that December, he served with the 65th Service Squadron, Then the 4th Observation Squadron of the Fifth Composite Group. Going to March Field, Calif., two years later he served as assistant base adjutant and base engineering officer. In September 1937, he entered the Air Corps Technical Schoo1 Chanute Field, Ill., graduated from the Photographic Course a year later and was assigned as Photographic Officer with the 22nd Observation Squadron at Brooks Field, Texas. Moving to Wright Field, Ohio, in July 1939, General Hardy was named assistant chief of the photographic laboratory, Experimental Engineering Section. He completed the Air Corps Tactical School in 1940 and resumed his former duty. With the establishment of the Air Service Command in 1942 he organized the Photographic Group at ASC headquarters and later was assistant chief and then chief of the Aircraft Section of the Supply Division. Also in 1943 he conducted a survey of the Army Air Force's Logistic establishment in the China-Burma-India Theater. Going overseas in February 1944 General Hardy was deputy chief of staff of the China-Burma-India Air Service Command in New Delhi, and then in Calcutta later becoming chief of the Supply Division. Joining Air Corps China Theater Headquarters at Chungking in July 1945 General Hardy was executive for technical services. That September the headquarters moved to Shanghai and he was named assistant chief of staff for materiel and detailed to duty with the General Staff Corps. General Hardy was assigned to Air Force Headquarters in Washington, D.C., in May 1946 for duty with the assistant chief of air staff for materiel. Four months later he was named chief of the working committee of the Aeronautical Board. In July 1947 he was designated air attache to the American Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden, and in the spring of 1950 assumed additional duty as air attache of the American Embassy at Copenhagen, Denmark. That August he entered the Industrial College of the Armed Forces and graduated the following June. Reassigned to Air Force headquarters he was assigned to the Office of the Assistant for Materiel Program Control becoming deputy assistant in October 1952. Going to Japan in October 1954, General Hardy was chief of Air Force section of the Military Assistance Advisory Group there. General Hardy left Japan in June 1957, in August 1957 he became commander of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He held that position until July 1, 1958, when he became inspector general of the Air Materiel Command. On Feb. 1, 1959 he was relieved from duty as inspector general and assigned as director of personnel and support operations AMC, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, and July 1 of that year was named director of plans and programs for the Air Materiel Command. Leaving Wright-Patterson Air Force Base July 1, 1960, he became commander of the Middletown Air Materiel Area with headquarters at Olmsted Air Force Base, Pa.
