BRIGADIER GENERAL (DR.) JOHN J. HALKI Brigadier General (Dr.) John J. Halki is director of medical inspection, Headquarters Air Force Inspection Safety Center, Norton Air Force Base, Calif. General Halki was born in Fairchance, Pa., in 1926. He graduated from Morgantown High School, Morgantown, W.Va., in 1944 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the American and Asiatic-Pacific theaters until receiving an honorable discharge in March 1946. He earned his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from the West Virginia University College of Pharmacy in 1950. After working as a registered pharmacist, General Halki again attended West Virginia University, earning his pre-medicine bachelor of science degree from the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Medicine in 1954. He subsequently attended the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, Va., receiving his doctor of medicine degree in 1956. After serving his internship at Ohio Valley General Hospital, Wheeling, W.Va., he completed a three-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical College of Virginia in 1960. During his residency, on Sept. 9, 1957, General Halki entered the U.S. Air Force by direct commission. In August 1960 he was assigned as chief of obstetrics and gynecology at the 5060th USAF Hospital, Ladd Air Force Base, Alaska, where he served until December 1962. (The facility and installation were later renamed U.S. Army Hospital, Fort Jonathan Wainwright.) General Halki was then assigned to the 7625th USAF Hospital, U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo., as assistant chief and later as chief of obstetrics and gynecology and chief of surgery. During this assignment he completed the primary course in aerospace medicine and earned his flight surgeon rating. From August 1965 until August 1968, he was assigned to the Air Force Institute of Technology with duty in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Kansas City, Kan. While there he began working toward a doctor's degree in pharmacology, which he subsequently received in May 1973. In August 1968 he was assigned to Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. During this assignment he served in several positions, including assistant chairman and chairman, department of obstetrics and gynecology; assistant director, base medical services; chief, Flight Medicine Division; chief, Medical Processing Division; assistant chief, military public health; and director, Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Training Program. He was director of hospital services from February 1973 until July 1975. In August 1975 he became commander of the USAF Medical Center, Wright-Patterson, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. He assumed his present position on April 23, 1979. General Halki is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, serving on its finance committee from 1973 until April 1978. He is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Texas Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a member of the San Antonio Obstetrician-Gynecologist Society, past secretary-treasurer of the Armed Forces District of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a senior member and member of the board of governors of the Air Force Society of Clinical Surgeons, and a charter member of the Wright State University Academy of Medicine, Dayton, Ohio. From December 1968 to August 1970, General Halki was assistant clinical professor obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. In September 1970 he was elevated to associate professor, a position he held until July 1975. While stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, he served as assistant dean for Air Force affairs at Wright State University School of Medicine and as associate clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology. At this institution he has also served as a member of the School of Medicine Library Committee, the ad hoc Finances Subcommittee and the ad hoc Resources Subcommittee. He continues to serve as associate clinical professor of pharmacology at Wright State. General Halki is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is designated as a consultant in obstetrics and gynecology to the Air Force surgeon general. He is a senior flight surgeon. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award ribbon with two oak leaf clusters, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with service star, World War II Victory Medal and National Defense Medal. General Halki was promoted to the grade of brigadier general April 1, 1979, with date of rank of March 30, 1979. General Halki's hometown is Morgantown, W.Va. (Current as of May 1979)
