BRIGADIER GENERAL TIMOTHY D. GILL Brigadier General Timothy D. Gill is a command director for the North American Aerospace Defense Command, Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Base, Colo. General Gill was born in 1942, in Buffalo, N.Y., and graduated from East Aurora (N.Y.) High School in 1960. He earned a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from Allegheny College in 1964 and a master of systems management degree from the University of Southern California in 1971. He completed Air Command and Staff College in 1977, and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1983. The general entered active duty in November 1964 as a distinguished graduate of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program. After completing pilot training at Reese Air Force Base, Texas, in December 1965, he was assigned to F-4 training until April 1966. In May 1966 General Gill was assigned to the 36th Tactical Fighter Wing, Bitburg Air Base, West Germany, as a pilot. Upon completion of combat crew training at George Air Force Base, Calif., in January 1968, he served as an F-4 pilot with the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing, Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, where he completed 125 combat missions, including 100 over North Vietnam. In November 1968 General Gill returned to the 36th Tactical Fighter Wing. He graduated from fighter weapons school, Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., in 1970, after which he returned to his unit. In 1971 he became wing weapons officer of the reactivated 52nd Tactical Fighter Wing, Spangdahlem Air Base, West Germany. In September 1972 General Gill was assigned as an exchange officer with the U.S. Navy, flying F-4Js at Miramar Air Station, San Diego. In October 1975 he returned to Nellis as an aggressor pilot in the 57th Tactical Fighter Wing. In October 1975 General Gill joined the Air Combat Evaluation-Air Interception Missile Evaluation Joint Test Force, also at Nellis. He was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., in March 1978, and served in the Fighter Force Planning Division, Directorate of Plans, and as executive officer to the director of plans. In July 1981 he became the staff assistant to the industrial task force in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. In July 1982 he became a senior research fellow at the National Defense University. General Gill was assigned in August 1983 to the 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing, Clark Air Base, Philippines, where he was assistant deputy commander for operations and, later, deputy commander for operations. In May 1986 he became commander of the 18th Combat Support Wing, Kadena Air Base, Japan. A year later he assumed command of the 15th Air Base Wing, Headquarters Pacific Air Forces, Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. In November 1987 he was assigned as inspector general at Pacific Air Forces headquarters. From August 1988 until January 1989 he was deputy commander, Joint Task Force Middle East, U.S. Central Command, which had operational control of those forces assigned to support tanker escort operations and other designated missions in the Persian Gulf and North Arabian Sea. He was reassigned to Pacific Air Forces headquarters in January 1989 as special assistant to the commander in chief. In September 1989 he became deputy director for operations, Headquarters U.S. Pacific Command, Camp Smith, Hawaii. He assumed his present position in November 1991. The general is a command pilot with 2,600 flying hours in fighter aircraft. His military awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Medal with 10 oak leaf clusters, and Joint Service Commendation Medal. He was promoted to brigadier general July 1, 1989, with same date of rank. (Current as of January 1992)
