Major General Frederick A. Fiedler is deputy chief of staff for requirements, Headquarters Strategic Air Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb. He defines, develops and advocates SAC operational requirements during the weapon system acquisition process for new and modified aeronautical, land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles, command control, force management, space and advanced systems. He also oversees all SAC test and evaluation activities.
General Fiedler was born in 1939, in Durango, Colo., and graduated from the Academy of the New Church High School, Bryn Athyn, Pa., in 1957. He received a bachelor of science degree in engineering science from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1962 and a master of science degree in aerospace management from the University of Southern California in 1973. The general completed Squadron Officer School in 1967, Air Command and Staff College in 1974, Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1975 and Air War College in 1983.
He received his initial pilot training at Williams Air Force Base, Ariz., from August 1962 through September 1963. After completing B-52 combat crew training at Castle Air Force Base, Calif., he was assigned to the 5th Bombardment Wing, Travis Air Force Base, Calif., in January 1964. In June 1968 the general was assigned to the 320th Bombardment Wing, Mather Air Force Base, Calif., where he held positions as B-52 aircraft commander, instructor pilot and standardization evaluation pilot. While assigned to Mather, he participated in Arc Light operations in Southeast Asia from 1969 to 1970.
The general completed the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., in June 1971, and remained at Edwards with the 6512th Test Squadron, in flight test, until July 1973. After completing Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., he became operations officer with the 6171st Combat Support Squadron, Kwangju Air Base, South Korea.
General Fiedler returned to Edwards Air Force Base and the B-1 test force in July 1975. He remained there until August 1982, serving as B-1 test pilot, B-1 combined test force operations officer, B-1 combined test force director and vice commander of the 651Oth Test Wing.
Upon graduation from the Air War College in June 1983, the general was assigned as vice commander, 509th Bombardment Wing, Pease Air Force Base, N.H. He became wing commander in 1984. The general transferred to the 2nd Bombardment Wing, Barksdale Air Force Base, La., in May 1985 and served as wing commander. In January 1986 he assumed command of the 57th Air Division, Minot Air Force Base, N.D. General Fiedler became director for command and control for operations, SAC headquarters, in June 1987. In June 1988 the general transferred to Headquarters Air Force Systems Command, Andrews Air Force Base, Md., as deputy chief of staff for test and resources. He assumed his present duties in January 1990.
The general is a command pilot with 6,000 flying hours in more than 50 different types of aircraft, including more than 400 hours as a B-1 test pilot and 480 combat flying hours. His military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with oak leaf cluster, and Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters.
He was promoted to major general Oct. 1, 1989, with same date of rank.
