MAJOR GENERAL CHARLES M. EISENHART

Charles Marion Eisenhart was born in Culbertson, Neb., in 1914. He graduated from Nebraska State College at Kearney, Neb., in 1937 with a bachelor of science degree.

In October 1937, he entered flight training at Randolph Field, Texas. He graduated as a pilot at Kelly Field in October 1938.

In December 1939, he was transferred to the 27th Reconnaissance Squadron which soon moved to Borinquen Field, Puerto Rico (now Ramey Air Force Base), where he spent two and one half years. He later joined the 25th Bomb Group, as commander of the 12th Squadron on the Islands of St. Croix, Virgin Islands and Aruba in Netherlands West Indies.

In June 1943, he returned to the United States for assignment with the First Air Support Command at Charlotte, N.C. and commanded their advanced headquarters in "Tennessee Maneuvers" until January 1944; at which time he attended the Command General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. In July 1944 he became commanding officer of the 484th Squadron, 505th Bomb Group, Harvard, Neb., for B-29 training. In December he moved to the Marianas and assumed command of the 505th Bomb Group on Tinian Island in April 1945 until December of that year.

He returned to the United States to join the 58th Bomb Wing at March Air Force Base, Calif., in 1946. This unit later moved to Fort Worth, Texas and became the 8th Air Force.

Late in 1946 he was transferred to the newly organized Air Tactical School of the Air University, Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., as chief of the Bombardment Branch. He remained there until February 1948, at which time he attended the Armed Forces Staff College at Norfolk, Va.

His next assignment was with Headquarters U.S. Air Force where he served for four years as deputy director of public relations.

In 1952 and 1953 he attended the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. Upon completion, he was transferred to Lockbourne Air Force Base, Columbus, Ohio, as base commander. In July 1954 he assumed command of the 91st Strategic Reconnaissance Wing. He held this position until January 1956 when he was appointed chief of staff, Second Air Force in Ju1y 1957. He was then assigned commander of the 14th Air Division, Travis Air Force Base, Calif.

On Aug. 3, 1959, the general was assigned to Headquarters Strategic Air Command as chief of the Operations Plans Division, Directorate of Operations where he remained until June 25, 1962 when he became special assistant to the commander-in-chief of SAC. Going overseas, General Eisenhart, on Sept. 17, 1962, assumed duty as commander of the Seventh Air Division, England.
