MAJOR GENERAL GEORGE E. "JUD" ELLIS Major General George E. "Jud" Ellis is director of engineering and services, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics and Engineering, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. General Ellis was born in 1936 in Millinocket, Maine, where he graduated from Stearns High School in 1953. He received a bachelor of military science degree from the U.S. Military Academy in 1958; a master of science degree in systems analysis from Arizona State University in 1967; and a master of business administration degree from The George Washington University, Washington, D.C., in 1972. He completed Squadron Officer School in 1961 and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1972. After receiving his commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force in June 1958 he entered primary flight training at Bartow Air Force Base, Fla., and Webb Air Force Base, Texas. He was assigned to the 3510th Installation Group at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, in June 1959. The general transferred to Alaska in February 1960 and was initially assigned to the 712th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron as site engineer on Northeast Cape. Later, he served with the 718th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron at Unalakleet. In March 1961 the general was assigned as a base engineer with the 3345th Civil Engineering Group, Chanute Air Force Base, Ill. He entered Arizona State University in June 1965 and, after graduating in June 1967, was assigned as an adviser to the Vietnamese air force base commander at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam. Returning to the United States in December 1968, he became a project officer for the director of civil engineering, Air Force headquarters, until July 1971. After graduating from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in August 1972, General Ellis transferred to Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., and served as the base engineer, commander of the 3800th Civil Engineering Squadron and the Air University engineer. From November 1974 to June 1977 General Ellis served as the first chief of the Air Staff Civil Engineering and Services Management Evaluation Team. He then became chief, Operations and Maintenance Division, within the Directorate of Engineering and Services. In July 1978 General Ellis became the last commander of the Air Force Civil Engineering Center at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla. With the establishment of the Air Force Engineering and Services Center at Tyndall, he was assigned as the first vice commander. He transferred to Headquarters Tactical Air Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va., in May 1979 and served as deputy chief of staff for engineering and services. General Ellis became the deputy director of engineering and services at Air Force headquarters in October 1984. He assumed his present duties in March 1986. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star Medal with "V" device and oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with two oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal with service star, Vietnam Service Medal with five service stars, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with five oak leaf clusters, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Honor Medal First Class and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was promoted to major general March 1, 1986, with same date of rank. (Current as of October 1986)
