BRIGADIER GENERAL JOHN ROBERT DYAS Brigadier General John Robert Dyas is chief of staff, Headquarters Air Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. He directs and coordinates activities of the ATC headquarters staff. General Dyas was born in Mobile, Ala., in 1917. He graduated from Murphy High School in Mobile and attended Auburn University, Auburn, Ala., from 1935 to 1939, majoring in aeronautical engineering and aeronautical administration. He entered aviation cadet training in 1940 and received his flight training at Randolph and Kelly fields, Texas, and received his pilot wings and commission as second lieutenant in July 1941. His World War II service included duty in the North African and European Theater of Operations as a tactical squadron commander. Later assignments included positions as tactical group and wing commander, and chief of staff and deputy commander of the Third Tactical Air Division. From 1948 to 1950 General Dyas was adviser to the Peruvian air force. Other command and staff positions held include: commander, 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, February 1951 - July 1954; deputy commander, 19th Air Force, August 1955 - July 1957; deputy chief of staff for operations, 4th Allied Tactical Air Force in Europe, July 1957 - November 1959; assistant deputy chief of staff, operations, at Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe, November 1959 - July 1961; and deputy director of military personnel, Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, August 1961 -July 1963. He next went to Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, to command the U.S. Air Force Military Personnel Center. In July 1965 the center was changed to the Office of the Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff, Personnel for Military Personnel and he served as deputy assistant. In July 1966 he was named vice commander of the Seventeenth Air Force, U.S. Air Forces in Europe, with headquarters at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. He became commander, Task Force Alpha, Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in January 1969. He assumed duties as chief of staff, Headquarters Air Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, in July 1969. General Dyas is a command pilot. His military decorations include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal and Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon.
