BRIGADIER GENERAL EDWIN M. DAY Edwin Minor Day was born in Greensburg, Pa., in 1903. He attended Johns Hopkins University for two and a half years, and on Feb. 27, 1928, was appointed a flying cadet. A year later he graduated from flying school, was rated a pilot and commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Reserve. General Day received his regular commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Corps May 2, 1919, and was assigned with the 20th Bomb Squadron at Langley Field, Texas, Va., followed in December 1930, by duty as recreation officer and librarian at Langley Field. In January 1932 he went to France Field, Panama Canal Zone, to join the 25th Bomb Squadron and was transferred the following April to the 44th Observation Squadron at Albrook Field, Canal Zone. In November 1932, he was assigned to the 78th Pursuit Squadron at Albrook Field. In August 1934 he became a flying instructor at Randolph Field, Texas. In June 1939, General Day assumed command of the Air Corps Training Detachment at Glendale, Calif., and in January 1940, he entered the Air Corps Tactical School. He graduated in March 1940, and was appointed Air Corps supervisor of the Spartan School of aeronautics at Tulsa, Okla. In October 1941, he was appointed assistant director of training of the Army Air Force Gulf Coast Training Command at Randolph Field, Texas. He was transferred to Albrook Field, Canal Zone, in May 1943, as executive officer of the VI Bomber Command, of which he assumed command the following month. General Day, in December 1944 assumed command of Laredo Army Air Field, Texas. In September 1945, he was transferred to Fort Worth, Texas, where he served successively as deputy to the commanding general for flexible gunnery training and secretary of the general staff. He was appointed deputy chief of staff of the Flying Division of Air Training Command at Randolph Field, in January 1946 and a month later became chief of staff of the Flying Division. In August 1947, he entered the National War college from which he graduated the following June. In August 1948 General Day was assigned to command the 32nd Composite Wing and Kadena Air Force Base, Okinawa. In February 1949, he entered Letterman General Hospital at San Francisco, Calif., and the following month was appointed inspector general of Strategic Air Command at Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha, Neb. General Day, on Oct. 1, 1950 was assigned 60 days temporary duty at Military Air Transport Service headquarters, Andrews Air Force Base, Md., prior to being transferred to Dhahran Air Field, Saudi Arabia, of which he assumed command in February 1951 with additional duty as acting chief of the Military Assistance Advisory Group in Saudi Arabia. In September 1952 General Day became commanding general of the Air Photographic and Charting Service at Philadelphia, Pa., and in December 1952, moved with it to Orlando Air Force Base, Fla. General Day has been awarded the Legion of Merit and the Army Commendation Ribbon with two oak leaf clusters. He is rated a command pilot, combat observer and aircraft observer.
