LIEUTENANT GENERAL WAYMOND AUSTIN DAVIS

Lt. Gen. Waymond Austin Davis is vice commander, Air Force Systems Command, Andrews Air Force Base, Md. Systems Command is responsible for research, development, procurement and production actions required to place complete aerospace systems in operation.

General Davis was born in Yantis, Wood County, Texas. He graduated from high school in Sweetwater, Texas, then entered Texas Technological College at Lubbock where he received his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering in 1936. He completed the Advanced Management Course at the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration in 1949 and attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces from August 1953 until July 1954.

General Davis attended Primary and Advanced Flying Schools at Kelly and Randolph fields, Texas, from June 1936 until June 1937. He was assigned pilot duties with the 17th Attack Group at March Field, Calif., until 1938, when he attended the Photographic School at Lowry Field, Colo. In mid-1939 he returned to Brooks Field, Texas as an instructor pilot and photographic officer.

His World War II assignments included duties as assistant engineering officer at Patterson Field, Ohio; vice commander and chief of the Sub-Depot Control at Tinker Field, Okla.; director of flying training and later commander of the 5th Photo Group at Peterson Field, Colo.; and the North Atlantic Theater of Operations.

Following the end of the war, he became chief of the Fighter Branch, 4420th Army Air Forces Base Unit, Air Materiel Command, at Wright Field, Ohio. Following his graduation from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration in May 1949, he became chief of the Aircraft and Missile Section, Procurement Division, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. In February 1950 he was named Air Force plant representative at Boeing Airplane Company, Seattle, Wash.

Graduated from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in June 1954, he was assigned to the Deputy Chief of Staff/Materiel, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, and served as the deputy director, then director of procurement and production engineering, and as the assistant for production procurement.

In June 1958 he became deputy director of weapon systems, Directorate of Procurement and Production, at Air Materiel Command, Headquarters, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. In September 1958 he was named deputy director of production with the same Directorate, and in August 1959 was assigned as director of procurement and production for AMC.

General Davis became commander of the AMC Aeronautical Systems Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio in September 1960. In June 1962 he assumed duties as commander, Headquarters Ballistic Systems Division at Norton Air Force Base, Calif. He was named vice commander of Air Force Systems Command in July 1964, his present position.

Military decorations awarded General Davis include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Air Medal and the Army Commendation Medal.
