BRIGADIER GENERAL GEOFFREY CHEADLE

Brigadier General Geoffrey Cheadle is assistant chief of staff, communications-electronics, Pacific Command, Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii.

General Cheadle was born in Manila, Philippine Islands in 1924, while his father was serving there in the U.S. Army. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., in June 1944 with a bachelor of science degree and a commission as second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps. While at the academy, he completed flying training and received his pilot wings the day before graduation.

During the remainder of World War II, General Cheadle completed training as a B-17 pilot and remained as an instructor pilot at Lockbourne Army Air Base, Ohio, until March 1945. Selected for B-29 combat crew training, he proceeded to Roswell Army Air Base, N.M., and Clovis Army Air Base, N.M.

From January 1945 to February 1946, he was officer in charge of the Flight Control Section, Headquarters Twentieth Air Force, of the Far East Air Forces on Guam. He was then transferred to Los Negros Island in the Admiralty Islands group as communications officer for the 338th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron. From there he was reassigned to Clark Air Base, Philippine Islands, as communications officer of the 5th Reconnaissance Group.

General Cheadle attended Purdue University from June 1948 to August 1949 and received a master of science degree in electrical engineering. He then was assigned to the U.S. Military Academy as an instructor in the Department of Electricity until 1952.

During the Korean War, from June 1952 to June 1953, General Cheadle served as detachment commander and squadron operations officer in the Airways and Air Communications Service in Korea. He next was assigned to Headquarters 1808th AACS Wing in Tokyo, Japan, as chief, Communications Division, Directorate of Operations.

In August 1955 he entered training as observer/bombardier/radar operator at James Connally Air Force Base, Texas, and received a rating as navigator. He then attended B-47 bomber school at McConnell Air Force Base, Kans., and was reassigned in May 1956 to the Strategic Air Command as member of a combat crew and aircraft commander with the 351st Bombardment Squadron, Pease Air Force Base, N.H., and also served as squadron operations officer.

General Cheadle was assigned in November 1957 to Air Research and Development Command and served on the semi-automatic ground environment Project Office in New York City. From September 1960 to June 1963 under the Air Force Institute of Technology program, he attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass., and obtained a degree in electrical engineering in 1963.

In June 1963 General Cheadle was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Research and Development, as a staff development officer and later as chief, Requirement Plans Group, Directorate of Operational Requirements and Development Plans. He attended the National War College, from August 1966 to June 1967, and then was assigned to Headquarters Air Force Systems Command, Andrews Air Force Base, Md., as director of information and a year later became executive to the commander, AFSC.

From July 1969 to May 1971 he served in the Republic of Vietnam as assistant chief of staff, communications-electronics, U.S. Military Assistance Command Vietnam.

He became assistant chief of staff, communications-electronics, Pacific Command at Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii, in June 1971.

His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, and the National Order of Vietnam, 5th Class, He is a command pilot.

He was promoted to the permanent grade of brigadier general effective Feb. 24, 1970, with date of rank July 30, 1969.
