BRIGADIER GENERAL DUNCAN W. CAMPBELL

Brig. Gen. Duncan W. Campbell is vice commander, Air Force Communications Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill. The command engineers, installs, operates and maintains communications-electronics-meteorological equipment and facilities for the Air Force and selected government and civilian agencies. This includes long haul intercontinental and local base communications, air traffic control and navigational aid facilities, and weather equipment. The command is also responsible for Air Force standardized data automation processing activities and to meet these tasks, the command employs some 49,000 people in more than 500 units at nearly 435 locations.

General Campbell was born in Steubenville, Ohio, in 1936. He graduated from Tempe, Ariz. Union High School in 1954 and received a bachelor of science degree in electronics from Arizona State University in 1958. The general earned his master's degree in computer science from New Mexico State University in 1970. His service schools include Squadron Officer School at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., in 1963; Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Va., in 1977; Air War College, also at Maxwell Air Force Base, in 1975; and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, D.C., in 1975. In 1979 he completed the Executive Development Program of the University of Houston Graduate School of Business.

After receiving his commission through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps program, General Campbell entered the Basic Communications Officer Course at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., in May 1959. He was later assigned to Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, where he was the officer in charge of radio and radar maintenance for the 1962nd Airways and Air Communications Services Group.

In January 1963 he was assigned to the 1918th Communications Squadron at Scott Air Force Base and served as the telephone maintenance officer, maintenance control officer and officer in charge of the base communications center. General Campbell was then assigned to the 1968th Communications Squadron, Charleston Air Force Base, S.C. He commanded the squadron from August 1965 to June 1968, when he entered the Air Force Institute of Technology.

Upon graduation he took command of the 1880th Communications Squadron, Binh Thuy Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, from February 1970 to January 1971. The general then served as the Air Force automated digital network action officer and chief of the Networks Management Branch in the Directorate of Command, Control and Communications, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.

General Campbell moved to the Electronic Systems Division of Air Force Systems Command at Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., as assistant deputy for Control and Communications Systems in August 1975. In January 1976 he was named program director of the 478th Combat Theater Communications Program Office at Hanscom Air Force Base and was responsible for fulfilling Air Force responsibilities in the Office of the Secretary of Defense-directed joint service TRITAC communications program.

The general became deputy director for data automation at Air Force headquarters in September 1977. In October 1978 he was assigned as deputy director of command, control and telecommunications in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Plans and Readiness. In August 1980, General Campbell transferred to Langley Air Force Base, Va., in the dual position of commander, Tactical Communications Division and deputy chief of staff for communications-electronics, Headquarters Tactical Air Command. He assumed his present duties in October 1982.

His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon with "V" device and three oak leaf clusters, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal with service star, Republic of Vietnam Honor Medal First Class, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with palm and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

He was promoted to brigadier general Oct. 1, 1981, with same date of rank.
