MAJOR GENERAL DONALD D. BROWN

Major General Donald D. Brown is commander, 22nd Air Force, Military Airlift Command, Travis Air Force Base, Calif. As one of three combat-ready strategic and tactical airlift arms of the Military Airlift Command, 22nd Air Force's geographical area of operations extends westward from the Mississippi River, across the Pacific and Indian oceans to the eastern coast of Africa, pole to pole. Throughout this area, the 35,000 men and women of the 22nd Air Force perform airlift operations, provide a vast network of support facilities and maintain a flexible airlift capability in support of the global mobility and logistics needs of United States fighting forces.

General Brown was born in 1931 in Montreal. He was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program in 1955 at Columbia University in New York where he received a bachelor of arts degree. In 1965, through the Air Force Institute of Technology, he received a master's degree in business administration from Syracuse (N.Y.) University, with a major in production management. He is a distinguished graduate of Squadron Officer School, and has completed Air War College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. In 1978 he completed the advanced management program at the University of Pittsburgh and in 1981 attended the Executive Program in National and International Security at Harvard.

Beginning his military career in May 1955 at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, General Brown graduated from pilot training at Reese Air Force Base, Texas, in 1956. His first operational assignment was to the 18th Air Transport Squadron of the Military Air Transport Service at McGuire Air Force Base, N.J., flying North Atlantic routes in C-118s. This was followed by an assignment, from 1962 to 1964, as an instructor in the Transport Training Unit with the 1707th Air Transport Wing at Tinker Air Force Base, Okla.

When he was assigned to the Strategic Air Command in 1964, General Brown began his logistics career as a supplies management officer at March Air Force Base, Calif. In 1966 he was assigned to Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, as, assistant base supply officer and then as base supply officer.

In 1968 General Brown completed transition training in C-123s at Hurlburt Field, Fla. From November 1968 to November 1969, he was assigned to the 315th Special Operations Wing at Phan Rang Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, serving as squadron chief, then wing chief of aircrew standardization. Upon his return from Southeast Asia, he was again assigned to McGuire Air Force Base as a C-141 pilot; executive officer to the deputy commander, operations; chief, Current Operations Division; and commander of the 30th Military Airlift Squadron.

Transferring to Military Airlift Command headquarters at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., in 1973, General Brown served as chief of the System Support Division in the Directorate of Supply and then as director logistics From September 1975 to April 1976, he was assistant deputy chief of staff for logistics. The general was then assigned as vice commander of the 62nd Military Airlift Wing, McChord Air Force Base, Wash., and became commander in May 1977. He returned to Scott Air Force Base, in March 1979, as Military Airlift Command's assistant deputy chief of staff for operations, and in June 1980 become deputy chief of staff for plans. In this capacity he was responsible for all long-range planning for the command, which has some 92,000 people at more than 300 locations in 24 countries. In September 1983 General Brown became deputy chief of staff for operations, Military Airlift Command, with responsibility for all flying operations worldwide involving the command fleet of more than 1,000 aircraft. He assumed his present command in October 1984.

General Brown is a command pilot with more than 10,000 flying hours, including 146 combat missions in the Republic of Vietnam. His military decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon with "V" device and two oak leaf clusters and Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with palm.

He was promoted to major general May 1, 1983, with date of rank July 1, 1979.
