BRIGADIER GENERAL RICHARD A. BROWNING

Brigadier General Richard A. Browning is deputy chief of staff for logistics, Headquarters Pacific Air Forces, Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii.

General Browning was born in Zanesville, Ohio, in 1941, and attended high school in New Concord, Ohio. He earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Ohio State University in 1963 and a master's degree in education psychology from Our Lady of the Lake College in 1970. The general completed Squadron Officer School in 1967, Armed Forces Staff College in 1975, Air War College in 1984 as a distinguished graduate, and the advanced management program at the University of Illinois in 1987.

The general received his commission through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program and entered the Air Force in January 1964. His initial assignment was as a staff officer and student squadron commander with the 3750th Technical School, Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. Subsequent assignments in Air Training Command included commander of 3333rd Basic Military Training Squadron, Amarillo Air Force Base, Texas, and action officer, Military Training Division, Air Training Command headquarters, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas.

In October 1970 General Browning transferred to Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, as chief, off-shore training, U.S. Air Force Advisory Group. After one year in Southeast Asia, he attended the Aircraft Maintenance Officer Course and, in May 1972, was assigned as maintenance supervisor of the 474th Field Maintenance Squadron, Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. He deployed with the 474th Tactical Fighter Wing, Takhli Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand, in September 1972, and later returned to Nellis as wing maintenance control officer and commander of the 474th Organizational Maintenance Squadron.

After completing Armed Forces Staff College in June 1975, General Browning was assigned to Penrith, New South Wales, Australia, as an exchange officer with Headquarters Operational Command, Royal Australian Air Force. In August 1977 he was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., as logistics program monitor for E-3A's and E-4A/B's in the Directorate of Maintenance and Supply. He became directorate executive officer in July 1979. General Browning transferred to Hill Air Force Base, Utah, in May 1981 and subsequently became deputy commander for maintenance, 388th Tactical Fighter Wing. After completing Air War College in July 1984, he returned to Hill and served consecutively as chief of the Aircraft Division and chief of the Resources Management Division, Directorate of Maintenance, Ogden Air Logistics Center. In January 1986 he became director of maintenance. He assumed his present duties in May 1988.

His military decorations and awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with "V" device and four oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with three service stars, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, and Republic of Vietnam Honor Medal First Class.

He was promoted to brigadier general Nov. 1, 1988, with same date of rank.
