MAJOR GENERAL THOMAS B. BRUTON Maj. Gen. Thomas B. Bruton is the judge advocate general, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. General Bruton was born in 1930 in Weslaco, Texas, and graduated from Colorado Springs (Colo.) High School in 1947. He received a bachelor of science degree in business and a juris doctorate from the University of Colorado, Boulder, in 1954; a master of science degree in business administration from The George Washington University, Washington, D.C., in 1966; and a master of political science degree from Auburn (Ala.) University in 1971. General Bruton is also a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College and the Air War College, both located at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. Upon receiving his commission through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps program, General Bruton entered active duty as a second lieutenant in September 1954. He then served until August 1956 as assistant staff judge advocate at McGuire Air Force Base, N.J.; Otis Air Force Base, Mass.; and Selfridge Air Force Base, Mich. General Bruton performed legal duties at Wheelus Air Base, Libya, from August 1956 until October 1957, when he transferred to the 7100th Air Base Wing, Wiesbaden Air Base, Germany, to serve principally as a general courts-martial prosecutor. Beginning in November 1959 he served in the same capacity at Headquarters 17th Air Force, Ramstein Air Base, Germany. In July 1960 General Bruton moved to the Air Force Academy, Colo., for duty as an instructor and later become assistant professor of law. He graduated from the Air Command and Staff College in July 1965. His next two assignments were with the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, 2nd Air Division and Headquarters 7th Air Force at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam. Upon return to the United States in July 1966, he was assigned to the Office of The Judge Advocate General, Headquarters U.S. Air Force. He was first a member and subsequently chief of the Litigation Division. In August 1970 he entered the Air War College and upon graduation in July 1971 General Bruton was assigned as deputy staff judge advocate for the Military Airlift Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill. In June 1973 he transferred to Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe at Ramstein Air Base, where he served successively as the deputy staff judge advocate and as the staff judge advocate. Returning to Scott Air Force Base in June 1977, General Bruton became the staff judge advocate for the Military Airlift Command. In September 1978 he was named staff judge advocate for the Strategic Air Command at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb. He assumed his present duties in September 1980. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster. The general is a member of the Colorado Bar, the Bar of the Federal District Court, Colorado District and has been admitted to practice before the Court of Military Appeals.
