MAJOR GENERAL AUGUSTUS M. MINTON

Maj. Gen. Augustus M. Minton is chief of staff, Headquarters Pacific Air Forces.

He was born in Mount Carmel, Ill., in 1911. He attended high school at Carmi, Ill., and entered the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois in 1929, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree. He obtained his Master of Science degree from the Graduate School of Business at Harvard University.

General Minton was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers (Reserve) in June 1933 and entered active duty in February 1935, transferring to the Air Corps in 1941. During World War II he served at various bases and headquarters in Air Training Command. For his outstanding service as deputy chief of staff, ATC, he was awarded the Legion of Merit. In 1945 he was assigned as deputy chief of staff of the 20th Air Force in Guam.

After the war he served with the Air Materiel Command in Alaska, and in 1951 went to the Air Training Command at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., where he served as chief of staff until 1954. He then moved Chanute Air Force Base, Ill., where he became commander of this 15,000-man training facility. There he received an oak leaf cluster to the Legion of Merit for his accomplishments with the B-52, F-104, jet engine and rocket engine technician training programs.

The general moved to Air Force Headquarters in Washington in 1957, where he was assigned as director of civil engineering. As such, he was responsible for all design, construction, maintenance and operation of real estate and management of Air Force facilities. It was during this period (June 17, 1957, to June 1, 1963) that he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a duty of great responsibility.

In July 1963, General Minton became deputy chief of staff, Administration and Logistics, Headquarters Pacific Air Forces, located at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. On Nov. 1, 1964, he was assigned duty as chief of staff, PACAF. 

The general  is a registered professional engineer, a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Society of American Military Engineers, and the American Institute of Plant Engineers.
