Maj. Gen. James R. Marrs serves as Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Cyber Effects Operations, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, the Pentagon, Arlington, Virginia. He is responsible to the Secretary and Chief of Staff of the Air Force for policy formulation, planning, evaluation, oversight and leadership of Air Force ISR capabilities; force development of ISR total force Airmen; and integration of Air Force ISR planning with the national intelligence community. Maj. Gen. Marrs also serves as the National Intelligence Manager for Aviation and as the Executive Director, National Aviation Intelligence Integration Office under the auspices of the Director of National Intelligence.
Maj. Gen. Marrs was commissioned in 1987 as a distinguished and honors graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy. His career includes a variety of duties spanning operations, strategy, policy and plans. His deployments include operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Southern Watch and Enduring Freedom. He has commanded at the squadron, group, center and wing levels, and led twice as a joint director for intelligence (J2).
Maj. Gen. Marrs is a graduate of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies. He served as a special advisor to the Vice President of the United States where he provided advice and expertise on a range of national security issues. His seven joint assignments include leadership spanning intelligence, cyber, space, interagency and multinational activities. Prior to his current assignment, Maj. Gen. Marrs served as Director for Intelligence, Joint Staff, the Pentagon, Arlington, Virginia.
